Vietnam Vet's Hump to Pahrump

Ah, Spring! when a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of… humping. Humping to Pahrump that is, for the annual Vietnam Vets/Legacy Vets’ Hump to Pahrump poker run held March 29 to benefit needy veterans in Southern Nevada.

Humping to and from Pahrump is a regular activity for many a resident of the Southwestern Nevada town of Pahrump who commute daily over the “hump” known as Mt. Charleston to work in Las Vegas. The Vets’ poker run takes this same route, starting at Leather Headquarters on Boulder Hwy., stopping at Screwball’s Sports Lounge on Warm Springs Rd., Blue Diamond Saloon on Hwy. 160 and Mountain Springs Saloon at the apex of the “hump”, before reaching party central at the Saddle West Hotel/Casino in Pahrump.

The Hump is one of the more popular runs in Vegas — a “must-do” for many riders — and this year’s turnout was no exception as well over 500 riders turned out to party with the Vets.

Monika and I made the ride with a group of our Bikers for Christ brothers and sisters, and were also happy to be reunited with our old friend, “Sportster Pam”, who’s first run this was since her accident on the 95 freeway during a toy run last December. Her Sporty is back in one piece and we are thankful to have her back in the wind with us. Pam was accompanied by her friend, Will, who was riding an orange Buell.

About half the parking lot at Saddle West was taped off for use by the bikers. Several vendors hawked their wares while local band On Target ably entertained the troops with some rockin’ tunes. Burgers and dogs were included in the price of registration, but a number of riders (included Monika and myself ) elected to partake of the excellent buffet inside Saddle West.

The Vets always put on a good run and this year’s Hump was another winner. Thanks, Vets. We’ll be looking forward to humping it with you again next year!
